United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland:
After independence of Ireland from UK, some Irish people desired to remain under the British monarchy. As a result, the UK Parliament passed the Government of Ireland Act 1920, which divided Ireland into two parts: Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. Southern Ireland achieved independence and became the Republic of Ireland, while Northern Ireland continued to be part of the union. Therefore, the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is called UK or United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
