Who is Zarina Hashmi?
Zarina Hashmi was an Indian-American artist who is best known for her minimalist prints, drawings, and sculptures. Her work often explored themes of home, displacement, borders, journey, and memory.
Biography
Hashmi was born in Aligarh, India, in 1937. She studied mathematics at the Aligarh Muslim University, and then went on to study woodblock printing in Bangkok and Tokyo. In 1964, she moved to Paris, where she studied intaglio with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17.
After moving to New York City in 1975, Hashmi began to focus on printmaking. Her prints are characterized by their simple, geometric forms and their use of handmade paper. She often incorporated Urdu text into her prints, which added a personal and poetic dimension to her work.
Hashmi's work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions around the world. She was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honors. She died in London in 2020.
